In The Words of Kanye West….”What’s That Jacket, Margiela?”

Posted on October 10, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Fashion News, Fashion Tips, Home, Shopping, Trends No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

Actually, the answer is yes. That jacket is in fact Margiela. Maison Martin Margiela. The word on the street is that H&M has collaborated with Maison Martin Margiela to create a holiday line slated to hit stores on November 15, 2012.

For those of you that don’t know, Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela, also known as “Fashion’s Invisible Man” (for his consistent elusiveness), used to be the creative director for one of the most coveted brands in the world, Hermes. Margiela is best known for his concept of deconstruction, creating designs that are oversized and that have hems and seams on the outside of the garment. It seems that H&M is really on a roll these days where collaborations are concerned…Versace, Anna Dello Russo and now Martin Margiela. Way to go H&M! Designs for the new collection have been kept heavily under wraps, but here is somewhat of a sneak peek:

Exaggerated shoulders and long, structured coats…I can’t wait!

Until next time!

Designer Spotlight: Love, McQueen

Posted on October 2, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Fashion Tips, Home, Shopping No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

I’m dedicating today’s post to Alexander McQueen, one of my favorite designers. McQueen had to be one of the most innovative, creative and talented designers of his time (and possibly others). He wasn’t afraid to take chances and be “different”. What I love most about him was his ability to mix hard and soft, creating designs that showed both strength and fragility at the same time….which is not an easy feat.

I’m sad to say that I’ve never owned an Alexander McQueen piece…quite frankly, I’d have to REALLY break into the piggy bank to purchase one of his dresses. I have, however, admired his work from afar for quite a while. The set I put together is one of my dream outfits…one day folks. :-)

Here’s my Alexander McQueen Set:

Love, McQueen

His suicide in February 2010 shocked the entire world of Fashion, but his legacy lives on through his designs, a mark that will be forever visible in the Fashion Industry.

Until next time!

Fashion News: Designer Comic Books and Fashion’s Night Out – How Cool?!!

Posted on August 27, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Fashion News, Fashion Tips, Home No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

For those of you who don’t know, every year for just one night, the entire fashion industry comes together for an event called Fashion’s Night Out. It’s a pretty amazing and exciting event and the turnout is always stupendous. Stores stay open late, celebrity guests and designers make pop-up appearances for no reason and you can shop till you DROP! The event takes place this year on September 6th and is held for multiple purposes which include:

1 – To kick off New York Fashion Week

2 – To unite the world through fashion

…and most importantly

3 – To benefit various charities through its proceeds.

What I read in the news yesterday was that as part of Fashion’s Night Out, designer Phillip Lim has created a comic book called “Kill the Night” as a means to promote his Fall/Winter Collection. The comic book was illustrated by Jan Duursema (Star Wars) and co-written by the same guy that writes Batman and X-Men, John Ostrander. In the story, set in a Sin City-ish atmosphere, models face all the violence and dangers of the world while wearing killer outfits. I think that has to be one of the most creative ideas ever and I can’t wait to get a copy. You can request your copy through his website by clicking here. Only lucky clients purchasing at Phillip Lim stores on Fashion’s Night Out will receive a complimentary copy that night.

I’ll be in NYC on Fashion’s Night Out so I’m hoping to worm my way into someone’s party…or two! I’ll dish about all of that stuff when I’m back in town.

Until next time!

Fashion Tips: Minnie Mouse Hits the Runway!

Posted on August 17, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Fashion Tips, Home, Shopping, Trends No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

I read on Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) today that a number of London based clothing and jewelry designers will be collaborating on designs inspired by none other than…MINNIE MOUSE! How much fun will that be?! Minnie Mouse has maintained her place as a staple of cute, fun style ever since I was a little girl…and I’m no Spring chicken. :-) With the latest trend being ladies wearing big bows in their hair (i.e. Kelly Osbourne), these designs are rather timely.

The designers, which include Giles Deacon, Michael van der Ham and Richard Nicoll will be joined by milliner Piers Atkinson; accessories designers Katie Hillier, Lulu Guinness and Terry de Havilland; AND jewelers Bunney, Tatty Devine and Husam el Odeh. Whew! That’s quite the collaboration! The designs are set to be unveiled during their Spring 2013 show. Although I have no insight into what the designs will look like, I found some really cute Minnie Mouse inspired pictures on the internet. Check them out:

I can’t wait to see what the real designs will look like!

Until next time!

Designer Spotlight: Jason Wu’s Fashion Royalty Dolls

Posted on July 16, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Home, Shopping No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

You are not going to believe what I found while surfing the internet yesterday! I feel so behind in just finding out that Jason Wu, the designer, has a line of collector dolls on the market called Fashion Royalty Dolls. Please understand that I’m a loyal fan to Barbie, I really am. When I was a little girl, I had way too many Barbie dolls to count and I still get excited till this day when I see one of my little nieces’ playing with one. But these Fashion Royalty Dolls are no joke! We’re talking about some serious designs these dolls are wearing!

Apparently, Jason Wu conceptualized the idea of starting a line of collector dolls back in the year 2000 while living in Europe. His plan was create a line of dolls that are meant to celebrate the glamour and excitement of the Fashion Industry. With the help of the Integrity Toys design team, Wu was able to turn his idea into a reality by 2001 after receiving a warm welcome at Toy Fair that year. This line of dolls is definitely a step up, and are certainly not for the novice collector as they carry a pretty hefty price (from $100 up). You won’t find these dolls in Toys ‘R’ Us either people…you’ll have to find a serious doll retailer to get one of these. You can imagine what the clothing they wear looks like, after all, this is Jason Wu we’re talking about. I’ve never been so envious of a doll’s wardrobe in my life!

Check them out:

Absolutely insane! If you’d like to purchase one of these gorgeous dolls, check out the Integrity Toys website at http://www.integritytoys.com.

Until next time!

Designer Spotlight: Ralph Lauren Reveals U.S Olympic Uniforms

Posted on July 10, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Home No Comments

Hey Afaconados!

I read today that Ralph Lauren has revealed his sketches for the uniforms to be worn in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic this summer. After seeing the sketches I could not wait to write this post!

Since I was a little girl, I remember the Olympics having a profound effect on me. The relentless determination and hard work that goes into training, the pride in one’s country, the harmony of team work and the unforgettable looks on the faces of those who take home the Gold, never cease to amaze me. Considering the blood, sweat and tears that go into preparing for this momentous occasion, it’s only fitting that these power houses (better know as athletes) arrive in pristine style. Ralph Lauren really hit the mark on this one!

Check it out:

How sophisticated is that?! I have to be honest, because of my Jamaican heritage, I always route for both the U.S and Jamaica, but I doubt anyone will look as dapper as our U.S athletes this summer! Job well done Ralph Lauren!

Until next time!

Fashion News: The Christian Louboutin Cinderella Shoe

Posted on July 7, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Home 2 Comments

Hey Afaconados!

Every true Fashionista is a shoe lover and just about EVERY girl in the world is in love with fairytales. And not just any fairytale, THE fairytale…Cinderella. Well what if I told you that the genius behind some of the most coveted shoes in the world, Christian Louboutin, has designed a shoe inspired by Cinderella?! Well he did! In his own words, Louboutin said:

“Cinderella is not only an iconic character when it comes to beauty, grace and fairytale love, but also shoes. Her character and her story dictated the design to me, it was all there in the pages and the words of this tale”.

Yes Ladies there is a Christian Louboutin Cinderella Shoe, but the catch is that the majority of women in the world, no matter how much money they have, won’t ever get a hold of them. Disney will only allow 20 (yes I said 20) pairs to be released. A USA Today article stated that the pairs will be given away worldwide this fall. Disney and Louboutin will be releasing the giveaway details next month so if you want those shoes you’d better stay tuned! I promise you’ll be fighting me for them. :-)

Here they are:

How many of you want to get married in those shoes?! I know I do!

Until next time!

Designer Spotlight: Raf Simons…Dior’s New Creative Director Hits A Fashion Home Run

Posted on July 5, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Home, Trends 2 Comments

Hey Afaconados!

I hope all of you enjoyed your 4th of July. I decided to take the day off from writing yesterday so I could enjoy the festivities with my friends. It’s back to business today though :-) A very exciting fashion event occurred on Monday and it’s more than noteworthy. Raf Simons, the new head creative director for Christian Dior, unveiled his much anticipated collection at the start of Haute Couture Week in Paris.

The Belgian designer took on his new role at Dior after an extensive search conducted by the designer house to find a replacement for John Galliano. As some of you may remember, John Galliano was dismissed in February of last year after a drunken, anti-Semitic rant in a Paris Bar. Dior had been eager to move on from the incident by finding a designer with equal the talent of Galliano, but minus the drama. They certainly found what they were looking for!

Distinguished guests which included designer rival names like Dianne von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs and Alber Elbaz (designer for Lanvin) arrived at a luxurious residence near the Arc de Triomphe to find the ceilings and walls of the salon adorned all over with flowers…only one type of flower in a single color was used in each room. The 54 piece couture collection consisted of modern pieces with sleek, clean lines and bold, vibrant colors. In case you didn’t know, in couture, the clothes are cut and stitched by hand. The detail that went into each piece is nothing short of amazing. Needless to say, the collection was very well received and Simons has proven that he has the goods to take the designer house to new heights!

Check out some of the pieces:

Okay so my favorite piece is…YEAH RIGHT! I can’t choose a favorite because they are all my favorite! I love this collection!

Until next time!

Designer Spotlight: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen for “The Row”

Posted on June 6, 2012 by Johnnalynn Lynch in Designer Spotlight, Fashion Tips, Home, Shopping, Trends 1 Comment

Hey Afaconados!

I was so happy to find out yesterday that Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen received the coveted and honorable award for Womenswear Designer of the Year at this year’s Council of the Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards. The award was won for their luxury label The Row, which is cleverly named after London’s Savile Row, a shopping street in Mayfair (Central) London which is famous for it’s finely tailored and traditional men’s “bespoke tailoring”. The name of this line is clever, as you’ll see in pictures below, because their collection tends to have a masculine flair to it. Cool huh?!

Mary Kate (Left) wearing a long sleeved black silk dress from The Row's 2013 Resort Collection and Ashley (Right) wearing a plum colored silk V-neck dress from The Row's 2013 Resort Collection

For those of you who don’t know, the CFDA awards is like the Oscars of Fashion, and the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, with past winners like Proenza Schouler (2011) and Marc Jacobs (2010), is said to be the biggest award of the night. These talented, ever-chic and business savvy twin tycoons have definitely sealed their place in the fashion industry. Check out some pieces I selected from their 2012 Resort Collection:

These girls have clearly shown the Fashion Industry that they should be taken seriously. Until next time!
